Derby Days a Huge Success

This year, the Alpha Lambda chapter took Derby Days to a whole new level, raising a total of over $55,000 for the UW American Family Children’s hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.  In a complete overhaul of the old events, day events such as “Dunk-a-Sig” and “Table Design contest” brought innovative new ideas to life.   The biggest addition was a night event called “Derby Days Sweetheart” where up to 2 participants from each sorority competed in different events like the runway styled “best dressed”, a talent show, and a question and answer session.  This event was judged by UW alum and Sigma Chi, Dave Bruns, legendary UW golf coach, Dennis Tiziani, UW Children’s hospital director, James Gilmore, and NCAA 2013 UW Men’s Swimming champion, Drew DeTuit.  A special introduction was led by the president and CEO of the UW Hospitals and Clinics, Donna Katen-Habensky, who presented the chapter with a plaque admitting them into the Legends level of the Mary Cornelia Bradley society, the highest honor that can be given to a donor by the UW American Family Children’s Hospital.  The Derby Days Chairs then presented Donna with a check of the money collected, who responded with a heartfelt speech explaining the significance of this kind of donation to a child of their hospital.  Overall, Derby Days was a huge success, setting the bar high and daring the next year’s Sigma Chi’s to beat it.
