Successful Derby Days

Derby Days is a national philanthropy hosted by every Sigma Chi chapter across the country. It consists of a weeklong competition among all of the sororities in the Greek system.  Some of the events this year included Meet-and-Greet night, Karaoke night, Tug-O-War, a volleyball tournament, and a BBQ where the winner of Derby Days was announced.  Points are awarded to each sorority by event, and the house that ends up with the most points at the end of the week wins. This year, Gamma Phi Beta beat Alpha Chi Omega by the smallest of margins.  But while this week is always a great time, the goal of this competition is to raise money for charity.  All of the money that Alpha Lambda raised was donated to the Children’s Miracle Network, a coalition of hospitals dedicated to providing education for treatment and prevention of childhood diseases. This year, Alpha Lambda raised nearly $13,000, the most money in the chapter’s history. At the end of the week, the Derby Days chairs presented the check to a family directly affected by the Children’s Miracle Network. We focused on donations from family members of our brothers this year to raise our final results. Next year, we will be focusing on more Alumni involvement. The sky is the limit for this philanthropy, and the bar continues to be raised every year.
